Tomatoes: Harvest kicks off

Heat, water shortages, delayed planting - the 2025 tomato harvest is under pressure. While the warehouses are already empty, in some regions the harvest is only just beginning.

An overview of current developments:

🇮🇹 Italy
In northern Italy, the harvest has been underway for two weeks and the fields are in good condition - the first yield estimates will follow shortly. In southern Italy, cherry tomatoes, passata and diced tomatoes are already being harvested. The Roma tomato remains problematic: In Apulia, around 20 % fewer were grown due to water shortages, and the persistent heat is an additional burden. Below-average yields are likely.

🇪🇸Spanien & 🇵🇹 Portugal
Planting was significantly delayed in the spring due to unfavorable weather conditions - a backlog that could not be made up. The harvest is expected to start between August 5 and 10.

🇹🇷 Turkey
There are already signs of a smaller harvest here. The extreme heat during the flowering period has taken its toll on the plants.
